Meet the Locals: Crafted Concrete

There is nothing better than adding your personal touch to your home, and having a one-of-a-kind bespoke piece to create the exact look your after is a great way to add your flair to what could be an ordinary area.

Andrew from Crafted Concrete does just that – creating unique concrete items to transform the ordinary into something you love to live with. The Crafted Concrete range includes indoor & outdoor kitchen and bathroom vanities, sinks, and bench tops. You dream it, and he will create it!
We caught up with Andrew to learn more about his local business Crafted Concrete:

Could you give yourself a little bit of an introduction?

My background is in sailing, I have worked in the super yachting industry as an engineer for the last 25 years. I moved to Raglan with my family in 2011 and we have not looked back.

What inspired you to start Crafted Concrete?

I am pretty good at fixing things, you need to be as an engineer on a 200ft sailing boat! But I felt the urge to do something creative. I designed and built my kitchen four years ago including a concrete benchtop. I enjoyed the creative process of producing a piece of furniture that looks and feels great and is an integral part of daily life.

Where are you based?

My workshop is in Shed 12 Nau Mai, Raglan, where I share the space with Motide. We have a showroom there, so you are welcome to come visit.

What makes Crafted Concrete Unique?

Our products are designed and built-in Raglan, which means we can work together to custom build. I create fiberglass, reinforced concrete, which results in a very strong and much lighter product that is not prone to cracking or shrinking. This is superior to traditional concrete bench tops. This technique allows me to make sinks, vessels and other forms with a fine look and finish.

What is it about Raglan that inspires you and your style?

The local artisans, who take the time to create well designed and quality products. The natural environment, the ocean, the colours and tones you see everywhere you look, the support for locally made products.

How has the business evolved since you started?

I started last year in my garage, it’s quite comical, or quite insane what I managed to produce in the small space! I am loving my new workspace and the collaboration with Motide. Christina has a great eye for detail and plenty of good style advice.

What are the latest projects and what we can expect in the future?

I am currently finishing an exposed-stone bench top for an outside pizza oven and BBQ area. I am also working on expanding my range with round and rectangular above-counter basins and a wall-mounted sink designed for guest bathrooms.

What’s the dream for the future of Crafted Concrete?

To continue creating inspirational concrete designs, outside furniture and tables, they are great as they don’t blow away in the wind!

Where can we find out more about your business and see your work?

My website is www.craftedconcrete.co.nz which I will update as I create more items.
