Modern Mediterranean in Rangitahi Peninsula

One of the most unique homes in Rangitahi would have to be the modern Mediterranean home in The Village precinct just after you enter the Rangitahi community.

The clean white lines of what is essentially a perfect square are rendered in a Mediterranean plaster finish with hints of cedar and terracotta. The westerly facing deck offers views over the water and up to Mt Karioi, and on the northern side of the home, there is a private enclosed courtyard which is a particularly special place for the family to spend time enjoying the Rangitahi lifestyle. We caught up with the homeowner Monica to find out more about this beautiful home and where the inspiration came from.

Firstly can you tell us a bit about you and your family

Family of four, Monica, Justin and daughters Kalani (7), Luna (5), Justin and I moved to Raglan 7 years ago after chasing the surf and seeking a slower-paced lifestyle.

What drew you to purchase a section in Rangitahi? - tell us a little about your new spot!

From the moment we heard about Rangitahi, a new development surrounded by water & native trees that offers a unique outdoor lifestyle, we felt it would be the perfect community to raise our family. The section itself instantly felt extremely special to us, with its expansive views of Mount Karioi and set right near the water's edge.

We feel very blessed to wake up in such a magic spot every day!

What is it about living in Raglan and Rangitahi that you love the most?

We love the laid-back lifestyle Raglan/Rangitahi has to offer, the opportunity to swim/kayak/paddle-board right from your doorstep.

Your home is very unique; what inspired you to create a Mediterranean-style house?

Inspired by past travels to Europe, I have always been drawn to Mediterranean architecture and was keen to incorporate the traditional Mediterranean aesthetic into our new build to create a relaxed holiday feel from the moment you step in the door.

Can you give us an overview of your home?

We worked with Tane from Red Architecture on the house design, which was a lot of fun seeing him bring our vision to life. We chose to combine elements like white rendered walls, terracotta tiles and curved archways and doors throughout the home to give it a Modern Mediterranean feel. Matthew White was our builder.
He was great at taking our design on board, which included curved walls, Mediterranean niches and archways.

How did you find the design & build process? Were there any challenges that you had to overcome?

The biggest challenges we faced were building timelines and curved window manufacture.

Now that you have settled into your new home, what is your favourite part of the house?

The courtyard is an open-air design that I love - the design allows us to enjoy the sunshine during the day and spend evenings out under the stars. It is really sheltered and private for the entire family to enjoy and has a lovely outlook out over the water.
